OLD CROME

'Old Chrome'
Anyone on this planet could only dream of owning any one of these cars. A couple restored every one of these cars and still retain ownership to everyone. They live on Vancouver Island. This collection is without a doubt the absolute finest collection of fifties cars in the World. I will endeavor through mere photographs to display this incredible collection of beauty on this webpage.

1956 Ford Skyliner (Glasstop)** We restored this car in 1988 from an original car that came from the Indian reservation here on Vancouver Island. It is full power with all options.

1956 Meteor Crown Victoria** We restored this car in 1990 and drove it to Ocean Shores Washington for its first drive. It is full power with all accessories except "air".

1955 Meteor Convertible** This car is mostly original and it has taken me 28 years to buy it from the origional owner. This car spent a good part of its life in Winnipeg. There is probably only about 8 of these cars surviving out of the total production of 201 cars. We have driven this car more last summer than any of our other cars. I rebuilt all the mechanics and added all the accessories and options, and it has everything except "air". There is an article on this car in FoMoCo Times.

1956 Meteor Convertible** Meteors used some Mercury colors in 1956. This 56 Meteor is painted Grove Green and Saffron Yellow with a black lightning bolt and the production numbers are only 479. It is full power with all accessories except "air". She has taken us to Rockin Red Deer in Alberta, Hot August Nights in Reno, and many other trips. Because of the colour, we call her "Juicy Fruit", and many people have seen this car.

1956 Mercury M-100 Pickup** We have driven this truck all over the place form Calif. to Manitoba to Sturgis many times since we bought it in 1978. About 12 years ago I put an Aspen suspension, 302 and AOD in the truck to make it drive better It has never missed a beat. The next time I rebuild the truck I have a 5 L. for it.

55 Merc Sun Valley** I bought this car from an old lady's estate sale in 1983. It was rust free but pretty banged up with only 26000 miles on it. I added all the options and accessories, and restored only as needed, keeping the car as origional as possible.

56 Mercury Montclair Convertible** This car is one of our favorites. I found what was left of it in the Spokane area and restored and drove it to Hot August Nights in Reno in 1996. It is London Grey and Persimmon with full power and all accessories.

1955 Mercury Convertible** I tow barred this car from Southern Calif. in 1989 behind my little Ford short box 302. The 55 was so ugly, not once did anyone give me the "thumbs up". It is now restored Canadian colors, Sunset Coral with matching Tapestry weave interior and Metric speedo, full power, and accessory steering wheel. It has only 530 miles on it because we mostly drive the 56 Mercury convertible.

1958 Pontiac Parisienne Convertible** I built this car out of a super basket case. I welded 6 months on this car alone. It is a 348 tri-power, bucket seats and with practically every factory and dealer option avaliable in 1958. We drove this car to Hot August Nights in 2004.

1966 Park Lane convertible** I bought this car at Don Wheaton's in Edmonton when I was a kid, working in the oilfields in 1968. My wife and I honey mooned in this car in 1969 and then went overseas to work in the oilfield for 25 years. I had the car in my barn in Manitoba until May 2005. It is now at home on Vancouver Island with 30,000 miles showing on the speedometer. This is a Canadian built, bucket seat car in which only a handful were made.

The 64 Park Lane convertible is a good old 78,000 mile car, with all good parts to restore it. It is a full power, bucket seat car with super marauder engine and rare 15" wheels. I have cast iron headers and tri-power for it.

1958 Mercury Convertible** I looked for one of these cars for about 10 years and finally got this one from John Fowlie in Calif. We restored it with a 430, full power with memory seat and everything, and it is big. I was able to find a lot of NOS parts for this car, probably because not many of these cars are being restored. Mostly 57's.

When I found the 59 Impala, it was a rust bucket, folded up on a 8 ft pallat. The car had no interior or powertrain. It was origionally a black Canadian built car. I have installed a 1995 LT-1 fuel injected engine with 700R4 trans, but when finished this car will look like it was built this way from the factory(I hope). It is going to be the usual cruiser with fenderskirts, full continental kit, spotlights and so on. It is presently 70% finished but will probably be finished for next spring.

This 1959 Edsel Convertible is the latest addition to the Mountaintop Collection. Of course it goes without saying, this machine has full power options and has been meticulously restored under skilled hands.. Another beautiful contribution to an already stunning collection.

It is hard to imagine for me how all the cars that I had always admired all my life and just dreamed about how they used to look..........can actually be located in and indeed be the property of one couple in Canada. They couldn't possibly belong to finer people. Without their vision, fortitude, and desire, these cars would very probably be nothing but a mere memory processed in a scrapyard somewhere. Their efforts have ensured that these treasures of our past will be enjoyed by many generations to come. Thanks Guys

2009 Camping World Truck Series at Phoenix

TRUCKS: Harvick Wins, Hornaday Clinches Written by: Tom Jensen
Avondale, AZ

Kevin Harvick won the battle Friday night, and Ron Hornaday Jr. won the war.

Harvick won Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, while Hornaday, who drives a Kevin Harvick Inc.-owned truck, clinched his record fourth Truck Series championship with a fourth-place finish behind his boss, Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola.

As evenings go, this one couldn’t have gone better for Harvick, though it sure didn’t seem like it would be early on.

Johnny Sauter started from the pole in his Fun Sand Chevrolet Silverado, and was immediately challenged by Harvick’s Longhorn Chevy. But Harvick got loose and quickly fell back, spinning in oil coming out of Turn 4 and hitting the No. 15 Graceway Toyota Tundra of Aric Almirola to bring out a caution on Lap 8.

Soon after the Lap 13 restart, a familiar face was out front — Kyle Busch’s No. 51 Miccosukee Resorts Toyota, winner the last five times Busch has raced it.

On Lap 34, Brad Sweet spun his Great Clips Toyota at the entrance of Turn 3 to bring out the second caution of the evening. That sent the field down pit road, Hornaday earning a penalty for refueling before the catchcan was installed on
the truck. Hornaday, who had been running third behind Busch and Sauter, rejoined the race in 21st place, as Busch, Colin Braun and Stacy Compton led.

Shortly after the green flag flew on Lap 39, Almirola was back up to second to make it 1-2 for truck owner Billy Ballew. And on Lap 44, it was Almirola’s turn to lead as he blew by Busch, who took only fuel on his stop while Almirola took fuel and tires.

At Lap 50, the one-third mark in the race, the top five was Almirola, Busch, Harvick, Sauter and Braun, with Hornaday 16th. Twenty laps later, Harvick and Sauter both went past Busch to take second and third, respectively.

The top three remained unchanged at the halfway point, with Almirola 3.952 seconds ahead of Harvick. Championship protagonists Matt Crafton and Hornaday were fifth and 14th, respectively.

By Lap 88, though, Hornaday was up to 10th, putting himself in a better position to clinch the championship.

Wheeler Boys stalled on Lap 90 to bring out the third caution of the evening and setting up what was expected to be the final pit stop of the evening for most of the leaders. Almirola held the lead through two rounds of pit stops, followed by Harvick, Busch, Mike Bliss and Mike Skinner.

But the key was that Hornaday moved up to seventh, one spot ahead of Crafton, who had a dropped lugnut on his second pit stop.

The green flew on Lap 96, and a lap later, it was Harvick to the lead ahead of the two Billy Ballew Toyotas. On Lap 98, Busch moved by his teammate for second place behind Harvick. But three laps later, Almirola retook second.

With 30 laps to go, Tim George Jr. crashed to bring out another caution.

On the Lap 127 restart, Harvick led Almirola, Busch, Hornaday and Bliss, with Crafton in eighth. Busch quickly moved up to second, but Hornaday already was easing well ahead.

Then, Kevin Conway cracked the wall on Lap 134 after contact from Crafton, bringing out the fifth caution of the evening. Crafton was seventh at this point, but still behind Harvick.

The track went green with 11 laps to go, Busch putting the pressure on Harvick immediately.

With five laps to go, James Buescher crashed in between Turns 3 and 4, setting up a green-white-checkered finish and another chance for Busch to get past Hornaday.

But although Busch got close to Harvick on the restart, he could not get past, as Harvick drove to victory and Hornaday drove to a spot in history with his fourth series championship.

TRUCKS: Hornaday A Worthy Champion Written by: Tom Jensen

Hornaday became just the fourth four-time champion in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions Friday night, with a fourth-place finish in the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. In the process, at the ripe old age of 51, he also become the oldest champion in a top NASCAR division.

It was a moment of supreme triumph for Hornaday, who previously won Truck Series titles in 1996, ’98 and 2007 and narrowly missed last season, when he lost by a mere 7 points to Johnny Benson.

In 24 races this season, Hornaday has amassed impressive numbers, with four poles, six victories, 15 top-five and 19 top-10 finishes.

More than that, though, the 51-year-old California native has created a body of work over his career that’s earned him a place with NASCAR’s greats and the respect of his fellow drivers.

There are 45 Truck Series victories in 249 starts on Hornaday’s resume, and now, of course, the four titles.

“I think if you look at just the Truck Series alone, he'll go down in history as probably the best, the greatest ever,” said Jimmie Johnson,
who himself is pursuing a fourth NASCAR championship. “When you look at what he has done in the sport in general, from Winston West racing and the late models on the West Coast all the way through Truck, Cup and Nationwide, he has done it all and was very competitive in all of those series.”

But as much as he’s accomplished on the track, what Hornaday’s accomplished off the track is equally impressive.

In the Hornaday household, the family’s well worn black leather couch doubled as a bed for many an aspiring racer.

Johnson, of course, is a California native like Hornaday and Hornaday’s boss, Kevin Harvick, who won Friday night’s race. According to Johnson, Hornaday’s generosity and willingness to help young racers is well known to other drivers.

“I think his legacy is going to be better defined as time goes on, but he's going to be known for more than just what he has done in the Truck Series,” Johnson said of Hornaday. “I see guys today that talk about late models that he built for them. … There are so many people that you affect and touch and work with over time, that I think Ron ... Ron will be known as the greatest ever … but he has done so much more. I think people that are close to him respect him more for the man he is than just what he has accomplished in a car.”

Harvick said that Hornaday is still active helping other drivers. “I don’t think that’s quit,” said Harvick of Hornaday and Hornaday’s wife, Lindy. “You go over there and there’s still a lot of people that they nurture and their house is always open. It’s always been that way. What you see is what you get with Ron and Lindy and the whole family. It’s always been one big family and if you want to be a part of it, then come on over. That’s just the way they’ve always been.”

As for Hornaday, he was typically modest about his accomplishment. Asked how he felt, the first thing he said was that he was still racing hard for the owner’s championship in the Truck Series, where the Kevin Harvick Inc. No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado is 60 points ahead of Billy Ballew’s No. 51 Toyota that Kyle Busch has driven for much of the season.

“It’s not over by far,” Hornaday said. “We’re racing Kyle Busch for owner’s points and that’s the true goal. It shows how great our team is and Kyle’s been really running strong. He’s got what, six, seven wins this year? So we’re going to do everything we can to hold him off.”

And thing that Hornaday seemed happiest about with his fourth championship was that it broke a tie with his old nemesis and friend Jack Sprague, as three-time champions. But more than that, Hornaday said he hoped to see Sprague back racing one day.

“I’ve got one up on Sprague, that’s all that counts,” laughed Hornaday. “ … I told Sprague, ‘Now you’ve got to come
back and try to get a fourth one and keep me racing. … It’s been a fun battle with Jack and I wish he was still out here.”

But on this night, and for the foreseeable future, Hornaday’s accomplishments stand alone, as they should.

“It’s been fun,” said Hornaday. “And we’re not done. As long as Kevin and Delana will still have me, we’re going to win some more.”

Red Bull Air Race w/Porto Final 4 Footage

Bonhomme wins Red Bull Air Race Porto

Britain’s Paul Bonhomme won a thrilling Red Bull Air Race today in front of a record-breaking crowd of 720,000 in Porto to widen his lead to 4 points over defending champion Hannes Arch of Austria. Australian rookie Matt Hall took a sensational 3rd place, the first podium of his career, and jumped from 5th to 3rd in the overall championship.

Bonhomme stopped the clock in 1:09.23 on his final run through the 6.6-km course set up through 17 Air Gates on the Douro River under brilliant blue skies in the coastal Portuguese city to beat Arch by 0.94 seconds and Hall by 2.00 seconds. It was the second 2009 win for Bonhomme, who now has 55 championship points compared to 51 for Arch. Hall has 33 points and has overtaken both Nicolas Ivanoff of France and Mike Mangold of the United States on the strength of his stirring performance.

“Thank you Porto,” said a delighted Bonhomme upon hearing over the radio that he had won the tight battle. “It’s a beautiful city and we love it here,” he added. The British ace also became the first pilot to win more than one race this year but quickly warned the championship was far from over – he saw it slip out of his hands in the final race of 2007 and 2008. “I’ve been in this situation before. Four points is not a lot when there are 13 points available to the winner. It will be ‘all-guns-blazing’ for Barcelona.”

Arch had been leading this year’s championship until the fourth round in Budapest, when the Austrian failed to get on the podium for the first time in over a year with a disappointing fourth place. Arch came to Porto looking to grab the lead back from Bonhomme. He stumbled in Qualifying on Saturday in front of a crowd of 200,000, finishing ninth after hitting a pylon and had to watch Bonhomme win an extra point awarded to the fastest Qualifier. But Arch bounced back in style on Sunday despite the intense pressure, putting in one brilliant run after another to advance to a Final 4 showdown against Bonhomme, Hall and Hungary’s Peter Besenyei.

“After qualifying yesterday I nearly gave up and said ‘okay I have to fly cautious’,” said Arch. “But that doesn’t fit my style. I have to try to be the fastest. I’ll go to the final race in Barcelona with the same mindset: attacking and giving Paul a hard time. I think Paul is already feeling the pressure he’ll be under. The Barcelona track is better suited to my plane.”

Hall, a former RAAF fighter pilot, was thrilled to become the first rookie to win a spot on the podium after he had come so close in his first two races, taking 5th place in Abu Dhabi and San Diego. After slipping to 7th in both Windsor and Budapest, Hall was determined to focus on flying clean and eliminating errors and it showed on Sunday. “It’s something I didn’t expect,” he said. “People had been saying I’d get on the podium here. But to actually follow through and do it is amazing.”

Porto was a disappointing race for Americans Kirby Chambliss and Michael Goulian. Chambliss was forced to retire with engine problems despite posting the fastest time of the day in the Top 12 placing him 8th. Goulian, who won the first race of his career in Budapest last time out, fell to 9th place. Mangold, the 2007 champion having a remarkably consistent year, salvaged some U.S. pride by taking 5th place, which leaves him 4th overall.

Two other rookies had promising results in Porto. Matthias Dolderer of Germany took a solid sixth place and Japan’s Yoshi Muroya got 10th place after taking a career-high 4th in Qualifying on Saturday.

The 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Champion will be decided at the season finale in Barcelona, Spain on 3/4 October.

AMERICAN LEMANS

Heavy rains hand Peugeot Petit Le Mans!

27/09/09

After several days of searing heat, the Georgian weather took a turn for the worse on Saturday. A cocktail of showers, storms and flooding caused the race to be interrupted shortly before the halfway point, with the N°08 Peugeot of Montagny and Sarrazin lapping ahead of the N°07 machine of Minassian and Lamy. In the end, the organisers chose not to send the cars back out, handing Peugeot its second one-two finish of the year following its triumph in the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

Not once in the past 11 years has the 10-hour Petit Le Mans endurance race unfolded and ended in such appalling conditions. Following the intense heat that marked qualifying, the heavens opened early on race day, prompting the warm-up session to be delayed, and the cars were forced to line up on the grid immediately after the handful of warm-up laps that were actually completed. This situation didn't make life easy for Peugeot which was unable to fine-tune its wet weather set-up prior to the start, especially since the 908 HDi FAP had never previously competed in such conditions.

The early part of the race soon saw the two French cars lose their lead and they were unable to match the pace of the Audis which took control of proceedings. The track then dried out a little on a couple of occasions in the course of the first hour, however, and that gave first Pedro Lamy and Nicolas Minassian in the N°07 car a chance to close to within a handful of seconds of McNish's pace-setting Audi. Meanwhile, the N°08 sister car of Franck Montagny and Stephane Sarrazin – which had trailed the leaders by as much as two laps at one point – succeeded in making up ground thanks to a carefully thought through strategy.

The displays of the two 908 HDi FAPs under the seven safety cars and the return of dry conditions then enabled the two Peugeot crews to take the battle to the McNish/Capello Audi, which led to a thrilling scrap and some breathtaking passing. A further safety-car intervention, the return of torrential rain and a spin by McNish put the seal on the final positions when the race was red flagged for safety reasons after 4 hours and 48 minutes.

The teams remained in the starting blocks for almost four hours as they waited for the re-start, but in the end the organisers chose not to send the cars back out...

Bruno Famin
"Following the delayed warm-up, we had just five laps to set up the cars, and we started the N°07 car in a predominantly wet weather set-up, with the N°08 running dry weather settings. Intermediate tyres are not permitted in the United States, so we had to make do with full wets before we were able to switch directly to slicks. When the track eventually dried out, both cars proved very quick and we were able to run a double-stint strategy thanks to the consistency and performance of our tyres. At the same time, we coped very well with the safety car periods to catch and ultimately pass the Audis."

Stephane Sarrazin
"We started the race with a low downforce set-up which made my first stint very difficult indeed. However, as soon as we switched to slicks, we were able to revert to a qualifying pace. It's nice to win after finishing second so often!"

Franck Montagny
"It's great to have won the mini Le Mans! It all feels very weird, but I think the organisers were right to stop the race, because the conditions really were dangerous. We had an excellent strategy and our car was very fast once we were able to run on slick tyres."

Olivier Quesnel
"We came here with the aim of using this race as a work session, while at the same time endeavouring to win. The entire team functioned very well and our drivers didn't make a single mistake despite the awesome conditions. We really made a big effort to win today and we can now look back at a great record in 2009 thanks to our one-two at Le Mans, our win at Spa, our second place at Sebring and our performance here at Road Atlanta today. Not to mention the all-Peugeot podium on January's Rallye Monte-Carlo and the Drivers' and Manufacturers' titles we have just secured in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge thanks to subsidiary-run programmes."

Petit Le Mans – final positions
1, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP 08 (Sarrazin/Montagny)
2, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP 07 (Minassian/Lamy), +2.011s
3, Audi (Capello/McNish), +3.465s
4, Audi (Luhr/Werner), +1 lap
5, Oreca (Panis/Dumas/Lapierre), +3 laps.
